It seems like the advice to stay indoors and perhaps the lack of fresh yeast and bread in some supermarkets have led to a rapidly increasing interesting for sourdough among the Danes.

Since the press meeting held in the Ministry of State on March 11 2020, where Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared lockdown in Denmark, there has been an massive increase of google searches including the word ‘surdej’ (Danish for sourdough) in Denmark.

Looking over the past year, googles data reveals smaller peaks around Easter in April, doing the industrial summer holiday as well as around the fall holiday in week 42. However, none of the previous peaks compare to the current one.

Zooming in on past month, it becomes clear that the raise in google search for ‘surdej’ originates on the 11th of March – the same day the Prime Minister declared lockdown and many supermarkets around the kingdom experienced huge lines and hoarding by alarmed and worried citizens.

One of the bloggers providing inspiration for the amateur bakers is Anna Nordenlund Larsen. She owns the blog ‘Grødgrisen’, writing recipes for all sorts of bakery, porridge, and recomendations. Her blog’s resent data suggests that it is not only sourdough that keeps the Danes occupied these days:

‘Overall, the visitor numbers have multiplied by four recently. But for the sourdough it is even higher,” she says referring to guide on how to do your own sourdough.

While in lockdown myself, I thought I would give the sourdough a try.

(and then I got sick, and was not able to film the big bake, sorry)
